Mō‘ili‘ili Matters

Where the Mō‘ili‘ili community gathers online

Aloha all,
I was wondering if any one knew what the plans are for the former Star Market Site?

I particularly like the new Rainbow Vista Mixed Use Development Project at the Corner of S. Beretania and Isenberg. These mixed use types of projects are being extensively studied and there is a whole host of literature related to how these projects can begin to add community vitality.

Just food for thought, but I think that CVS should consider adding or changing their orientation towards the street, rather than an introverted type of business. The Safeway Kapahulu was developed in the the right way by adding some store fronts along Kapahulu Avenue. Safeway is a destination, and these types of large stores do not need street front access as compared to small businesses who could benefit from the visibility. However, I think that Safeway could have provided more small businesses or commercial space along Kapahulu Avenue.

By adding stores along the street, the idea is to create pedestrian friendly streets and pedestrian oriented businesses. Store fronts should greet people, not parking lots. If communities are walkable, the community could benefit from this in many ways such as increased pedestrian traffic, less automobile traffic, and safer streets, in both pedestrian orientation and crime. Walkable streets are pedestrian friendly with trees providing shade, street furniture for rest and leisure, and outdoor oriented businesses like outdoor dining, and more.

Thank you for letting me share my opinions and for the opportunity to speak. I am curious to what you think?

Hi Jonathon,
Glad you joined Moiliili Matters, your comments are great. Change is difficult, especially on an island. People like you, who can stand up and look around really can help us to make our community better. If we talk about these new ideas then people won't be so afraid of change.
I would like to see more trees in our neighborhoods. I grew up with trees lining the streets, trees cool the area, (global warming). Nowadays, it seems to me the main purpose of the trees is to provide employment for the guys who trim them to branchless sticks of wood.
I know that the moiliili area has underground rivers, is there a way to utilize that water source to get our neighborhood greener? Anyone have an answer to that? or a suggestion? Thanks

Hello Kathy,
I could talk to Janet Gilmar, a resident of Palolo and a respected Landscape Architect who is affiliated with the University of Hawaii.

Thanks for the nice welcome.
