Mō‘ili‘ili Matters

Where the Mō‘ili‘ili community gathers online

I'm doing my doctorate studies on creating a college town environment for the University of Hawaii and the Moiliili community.

I was wondering, what your opinion is on the area where Kalo Place, Kolo Place, Varsity Circle, and Varsity Place is?  Are these areas primarily renters?  What if this area could be better connected to the University of Hawaii campus?

Any response will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much

I am interested to learn more, could you please elaborate on what is exactly does the vision of creating a College Town Development look like?

Hello Fred,
I apologize for having to leave so early at the event on Tuesday and not getting a chance to talk to you. I don't have any specific developments pictures, designs, or renderings in mind yet, I was hoping to do that later in my studies and to get community input.

However, the basic characteristics of college towns, in terms of the built environment would entail mixed use development with retail and commercial spaces on the ground level, offices above the commercial space, and residential flats on top of the development. These buildings would be low rise in height.

In addition, the college town is characterized by being a very pedestrian friendly neighborhood with wide sidewalks, shaded sidewalks either by canopies above or tree lined streets, and having a large variety of shops and ethnic restaurants. The line of street front stores also make walking along the street feel safer.

As I study and observe past studies on college towns from the mainland and abroad, I am formulating in my research what exactly sets college towns apart. My approach is to see what it will take to create a college town in Moiliili, which is already an interesting town in its own right. To do this, I need community input, to understand how to create the college town environment without changing too much the social structure of Moiliili.

I am interested in meeting you to discuss a few of these aspects in further detail if you wish.
Thanks Fred,

Sincerely,
Jonathan Yabiku
