I agree with the comment with the Ala Wai situation. Now that the rains have started, there will be less of a homeless situation for a while. But I feel that anyone who gets assistance should have a physical home, the money provided with the government programs are for housing. If there is no housing, no check should be issued. That will motivate the homeless to get into a home.

1) The City used to have a pick up every week. People call for the pick up and the City sent the trucks. Is that service no longer provided or limited to single family homes?
With the big bulk items people do not have the ability to transport them to the dump and they will place them where they see other bulky items. 2) Once when a tenant was trying to get rid of a bulky item and asked the manager how to get rid of it, the manager told him to place it down the street (in front of the school off Kahoaloha St). That is why the building managers need to be held accountable.
3) Right now, there are large appliances dumped on Kamoku Street between Iolani Court Plaza and Royal Iolani. Right in between them. Both those buildings, have extensive cameras inside and can tell you exactly where it came from. So make the manger of the condos responsible. They are paid to do the job, get them working!
4) If the law says the condo must have a holding place for bulk items, tell them about that law, fine the managers, tell the tenants about the law give them something to work with!

Property owners do not get rich that is for sure. The math goes like this, the people that vote in the new taxes are the same ones that will end up paying more rent, so it is a lose, lose situation for all of us common everyday voters. The same as the Rail, we will be the ones paying, for crying out loud, why don't the people get it?

The more and more I walk around and see all the bulky items, and the more I talk to residents, the problem is just apathy. People just don't care when bulky item day is, they don't care where and when they should be dumping, they just want to get rid of whatever it is they are dumping. And property owners don't care either. The residents of the community who do care, need to start watching and reporting all the dumping. It will not get better until the people who care actually do something, we need to catch and prosecute a few of these dumpers and make examples of them. We also need someone to get this community fired up, get them excited about what a great place it is to live, work, play and raise families. When we all start to care, the streets, parks, and facilities will all start to improve. We all need to take owness in our trash, our kids, and they way in which we live to make Moiliili a better place!

As for the new property tax, I think it's terrible. I'm surprised Todd Apo relented to pressure from the mayor, saying council would still have the final say. I say "bullsh-t". rental property owners already pay higher insurance, GET, more income tax, etc. What is going to keepthese owners from raising the rents to cover expenses? I'm here to tell you, a small walkup with expenses doesn't make much money every month. You raise the property tax and rents will go up

Greg is totally right about the managers and owners of property. Now who can we blame for the homeless mess @ the AlaWai Park bathroom? Better yet, how do we solve that problem? Just putting it out there for comment or solutions. How does everyone feel about the Mayors idea to raise property taxes for owners of property that is rented?

The biggest problem with property owners is ; allot of them take no ownership in their properties. They hire a management company to take care of renting and that's it. The bulky items, trash, and maintenance issues pile up and they don't care. I write the bulky item rules in each and every one of my contracts. If a tenant doesn't follow the rules, I haul the bulky items and charge them.As a property owner I am responsible for appliances and the buildings and grounds. Any waste I generate I have the contractor or dealer haul away the old item. If a tenant has furniture they want to change for whatever reason, I hold them responsible for their items. That's only fair. I do provide an area for them to dump their regular trash, and that's all I will provide. I put it on the street, all bagged up nice and neat. I do this because tenants on the most part can't seem to do it properly, so I do.

As an owner I am very aware of who is moving in and out and i keep track of trash and damages tenants cause.

Any landlord, property owner/manager who doesn't, isn't doing his or her job!

Owners/management companies are part of the problem, but the owness resides upon the generator of the trash!

While walking in AlaWai Park this am I noticed a small problem. The sign on the bridge giving the hours for the park closing at 10 PM on one side and closed at 11 PM on the other side. While driving on Date this afternoon I could not help but notice the huge pile of trash on the Mountain side just past Kapiolani, it is discusting. I hope it gets cleaned up SOON. Any ideas?
Ron Lockwood Comment by Ron Lockwood on November 2, 2009 at 4:25pm
Had a nice chat with neighbors from a Kapiolani Blvd on starting a Neighborhood Security Watch (NSW) group for their building. They want to tackle disruptive neighbors; bulky trash; and neighbors not abiding by the 'house rules'. Good effort for our first meeting, and we are following up with a meeting in 15 days, on site with food & sodas.

Thanks for the nudge Greg. When I created this group, I did so because, I believed that property owners would be the most interested in organizing to improve our neighborhood. Our community is turning into a dumping ground. If we do not do something to turn this around, our investments and what we have tried to build-up and maintain for our families (our homes) will go down the drain.

There was a previous discussion on illegal garbage dumping in a separate forum.

Greg, I like what you said you do with your tenants. Perhaps we should try to work on getting HPD to enforce the litter laws against property owners?
Gregory Cuadra Comment by Gregory Cuadra on July 8, 2009 at 9:32pm
Hard to believe with all the low rise apts and condos in Moiliili that there are no property owners out there with nothing to say. Our community is turning into a dumping ground. Please join this site and help make this a community that is CLEAN and SAFE for us all to raise our families, and live as neighbors
