Thanks Kathy, I appreciate your feed back. I think that Manoa does have the proximity advantage and the UH is under the Manoa neighborhood district, but my goal in researching college towns is to help minimize the use of the automobile, or the depen…

I think if you are looking for a college town for UH, you would look at Manoa. Most college towns are closer to the college and have amenities that college students want. Most of the students from UH are commuters. The majority of them have cars ( d…

Introduce yourself!
Hello,
My name is Jonathan Yabiku and I am a doctoral candidate of the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii. It is my intention to research ways to develop college towns. As part of my study, I wanted to do a case study on the Moiliili Community and the University of Hawaii. I wanted to find out where these two entities stand in terms of relating to each other. How do these communities mix? What improvements in relationships would these communities like to see? Thank you for allowing me to join your community.

Hello Derek,
Thank you very much for responding to me and letting me know of Evan Dobelle and the others on this great website? I don't think I knew exactly what my interest would be when Dobelle was President of the University but I will surely look up the information.

I am curious, what's your opinion on the college town? Do you think Moiliili could benefit from an establishment of a college town. I personally think that there could be more physical connections between the University and the Moiliili community such as adding great pedestrian friendly sidewalks.

Thanks Derek!

Aloha Jonathan!

Welcome to Moiliili Matters and mahalo for joining us.

It sounds like you're doing some fascinating research. Former UH President Evan Dobelle publicly stated that he wanted to have a "college town." You should be able to find some info on the internet about those comments and goals. I believe I also posted some quotes in a discussion forum posting as well on this site. There are a number of good resources on this site that you could ask. We have several neighborhood board members on here, as well as business and other community leaders. We have three state lawmakers (2 Representatives and 1 Senator) and our district councilmember also.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this site.
