Mō‘ili‘ili Matters

Where the Mō‘ili‘ili community gathers online

So what are we doing about the homeless in the area.
I use the Waikiki Library because there are less homeless people hanging around.
I feel so bad for them, it is very hard to live on the streets, I feel we are not being kind, by ignoring them.

I'm a Kaneohe resident and member of this group because communities must work together on common issues. For instance, The Windward Homeless Coalition is just forming. We are a group of concerned citizens, social service workers, churches and other organizations working to help the homeless. We have incorporated the organization and are in the process of applying for non-profit status. The purpose of organizing is to help groups work together and avoid duplication of effort. We recognize that the solution is not to drive the homeless from one part of our island to another. Solutions are complex. There are many people and organizations trying to help, but they need better ways to be sure they are effectively working together. The Windward Homeless Coalition hopes to facilitate that cooperation.

Hi Gregory, I agree with you. Just wondering what,if anything, is being done. It is an international problem. One thing I feel could help is to mandate that anyone getting public fund dss, tanif or social security disability to have a physical place to live. The homeless have no safe place to rest their head. very hard life especially those with kids. I feel that allowing them to live on the streets can not help them in any way. We are not being a kind community to allow them to live in the streets. Tourists really can not distinguish the homeless from local people at the beach but the numbers are growing and when they get sick we have to pay for their health care. A couple of years ago, I noticed a fellow who lived at ala moana beach park in the day time, looked sick with a catheter. He was walking into the water at the beach, He looked very sick and I asked the life guard if he could call the 911, because I didn't have my phone, the life guard said that he was not allowed to do that. So it seems to me that there is not a cohesive plan to work on this problem. Just my observation. I was just wondering what we are doing in our community about that.
Have a great day.

Kathy: We do have allot of homeless. I want to assure you, the neighborhood is not ignoring them. The problem is what can we do for them, and how will we fund the efforts that are really needed in order to get them off the street? You cannot simply open a place and throw them all together. Some need job training, some help with addictions, or mental illness. There are several groups out there that are trying, but they need some help in coming together as one to get better results.

If you have any solutions or recommendations, please share them with us all.
